Vaughn Ventus SLR4 Intermediate Goalie Leg Pads
Intro & New Features
New for 2024 is the SLR4 Intermediate leg pads from Vaughn. These pads feature many elite attributes and tech—some of which are also found in the Senior pads—including QuickSlide, a Rotation Control strap, and bungee cord toe attachments. These pads have been optimized to enhance performance in the butterfly stance, and are a great option for young goalies who often find themselves going down into the position.
External Material
Vaughn used classic jenpro synthetic leather on the exterior of the pads, a common option in goalie pad manufacturing due to its water resistance and durability. In addition, the pads have been outfitted with Vaughn’s own QuickSlide, renowned among many elite and professional goalies for its unparalleled glide along the ice.
Internal Construction
The core of the SLR4 Intermediate leg pads is made entirely of HD foam for good protection and seamless performance. Akin to the rest of the SLR4 series, the pads have a strong focus on controlling rebounds. This comes from the front panel and core’s functions, which give the pads a more active puck response.
Pad Break
The pads do not have a break, but they are pre-curved. No-break pads are ideal for butterfly goalies because they ensure a better and firmer seal along the ice while down in the position. The curve on these pads specifically enhances seal against five-hole shots and offers a more precise fit on the leg.
Boot Angle & Toe Taper
The SLR4 sticks to a 60° boot angle and 90° toe taper, same as the SLR2. These specs give increased seal on the ice and add coverage overall, making rebound management easier in the butterfly position.
Knee Cradle
The knee and leg cradles are wide for enhanced pad rotation, and the angled adjustable strap keeps the area comfortable and tailored to the wearer’s preference. A tapered outer edge works with the leg cradle to further improve pad rotation. The deeper inner knee side panel maximizes balance and coverage.
